IT Volunteer Needed

ABHS is looking for a volunteer who has web savvy and a modest amount of time to help us locate websites of organization with historical interest and content, i.e., Baptist history, church history, US history, religious history, church studies, etc.  We want to identify where we might post a link or a badge to advance our History Matters Campaign.

Any suggestions?

Joanna P. Moore...

Few persons have devoted themselves so sacrificially to the Baptist mission cause as Joanna P. Moore. Born in Pennsylvania, she moved as a young person (age 16) to Illinois where she became involved in a ministry to recently-freed slaves who lived on an island in the Mississippi River. Moore was the first person commissioned by the Women’s Baptist Home Mission Society. She founded a training school for black women in Baton Rouge.

Groups Are Forming on the History Matters Network

This on-line community can grow in incredible ways through the formation of on-line groups. The "Groups" tab on the left has an invitation for members to "Create a Group." ABHS invites you to be among the first to initiate a history based group of your own interest.

Here are some starters....

A Women in Ministry Group--to gather and share historical information about women in ministry in your area, region, ABC and other Baptists, and in your church; host discussion forums; feature blogs about women in ministry related interests, etc.

A Black Church History Group--to gather and share the rich history of African American baptist churches; share event announcements; seek and share information on ministries; etc.

An historical special interest group that can develop an on-line community to exchange "best practices" in collecting and communicating the history of local churches in ways the inform their ministries today.

What ideas can you come up with?

Join Me, the ABHS President, in Advancing Our History

I am happy to have this opportunity to greet you as my friends and invite you to explore my interest in the American Baptist Historical Society. As president I have a vested interest, of course. But even before I assumed this office, those of you who know me would know that I have always promoted the significance of the role that understanding our past plays in determining our identity and call both today and tomorrow.

The ministry and historic positioning of this American Baptist treasure has impressed me as I have become more initimately engaged as president. I am deeply impacted by the discovery of something that so many people have already known. We have a great treasure in these archives, shelves, and stacks. This treasure is not only for American Baptists, it is relevant and important for all who believe that people of faith have and are yet called to change our world.

That is why I am supporting and promoting the ABHS HISTORY MATTERS Campaign. This campaign will establish our capacity to provide educational opportunities to a new generation who will live out their faith in the world from a position of understanding their own place and role in history.

Our campaign goal for Phase 1 is $800,000. I am excited to report that $225,000 have already been pledged with over $100,000 of that collected. Join me in support of bringing our legacy to light. To give to the campaign go to: www.abhsarchives.org

Join the History Matters Network and please invite your friends.

Thanks,
Trinette

You won't want to miss being a part of shaping a great vision for the relevant use of Baptist history and heritage to raise new generations of Baptist leaders. Sign up on the ABCUSA Biennial website. www.abc-usa.org

Biennial Blues

Lovers of the blues know that this music is full of joy and zest for living--despite the difficulties of lost loves or empty pockets! So I am singing some very joyful blue notes for American Baptists and our history in California, despite the low attendence at the Pasedena biennial that surely augers poorly for our finances! The joy comes, even as I am also bone weary from so much traveling, because this convention brought me into touch with scores of stalwart Christians of the Baptist variety,… Continue

Journal entry from early Ohio Baptist pastor

I wanted to share with you all the following link that leads you to a journal written by Elder I. K. Brownson (1810-1899) as he traveled from Ohio to New York State in 1847. Eld. Brownson was twice pastor (1841-1844, 1853-1861) of the First Baptist Church, Greenfield, Ohio, which I am now pastoring.

History Matters on Mother's Day

Mother’s Day at Oakhurst Baptist Church began with an announcement that this was Congo Day. Why connect Congo with Mother’s Day? Because eastern Congo has recently been a place where warring groups are directing violence toward women. Planners designed the worship as homage to those survivors whose stories were retold through litanies and meditations that made up the “sermon.” The service was shocking, emotional, uplifting and frustrating—how was I the listener to process so much pain?

Easter Brings Hope!

This year has been packed with discouraging economic news, alongside excitement about new beginnings. It's easy for me to become exhausted or discouraged--with so much to do, so little time, so few dollars!

But spring is lovely in Atlanta, and the resurrection of tulips and other plants reminds me of that cycle in the life of our famlies and congregations. Recently I attended First Baptist Church of Madison, Wisconsin--a congregation that by most standards healthy and a vital part of its commun… Continue

This campaign will establish our capacity to provide educational opportunities to a new generation who will live out their faith in the world from a position of understanding their own place and role in history. This became even more real for me as I shared with a young American Baptist during the More than a Week National Youth Gathering sponsored by National Ministries. She asked me about Ann Judson during her visit at our booth. Ann Judson's bio impressed her as she became aware that even way back then a woman was such a great example of radical discipleship. As we talked about our history, I witnessed her eyes grow brighter and her head lift high as she understood her legacy a little better. "Wow, that's incredible," she exclaimed.

That is why I am supporting and promoting the ABHS HISTORY MATTERS Campaign. This campaign will establish our capacity to provide educational opportunities to a new generation who will live out their faith in the world from a position of understanding their own place and role in history---living a radical discipleship as the hands and feet of Christ.

Join me and others in support of the History Matters Campaign. The time is ripe!

Helen Barrett Montgomery Leadership Leaving a Legacy

Helen Barrett MontgomeryA licensed minister, social
activist, women's suffrage leader, author and lecturer, she published a translation of the Greek New Testament and was the first woman president of the Northern Baptist Convention (1921-22). I recently had the honor of preaching for the opening service of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School's Annual Helen Barrett Montgomery Conference. This year the conference celebrated the anniversary of her licensing in Christian ministry. As I prepared for the conference, I found myself relating to her in a "daughter's" spirit. I began to more fully know her and embrace her witness as I learned of her leadership in areas so needed today: women's rights, the education of women, preaching, international mission support and denominational leadership. Helen Barrett Montgomery was a leader who left a great legacy.

Dr. Samuel Dewitt Proctor....

Dr. Samuel Dewitt Proctor, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, received the A.B. degree in Language and Literature from Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia in 1942, the B.D. degree from Crozer Theological Seminary, Rochester, New York in 1945 and the Th.D degree from Boston University in 1950. On July 1, 1960, Dr. Proctor accepted the invitation from A&T College to become president having served successfully as pastor of the Pond Street Baptist Church in Providence, Rhode Island and professor, dean of the School of Religion, vice president and president of Virginia Union University.
Dr. Proctor was only 39 years old when he was inaugurated as the college’s fifth president.

Jitsuo Morikawa...

Personal suffering shaped the ministry of Jitsuo Morikawa. Born into a Buddhist family who immigrated to British Columbia from Japan, he first learned of Jesus from a Christian neighbor. He made a decision for Christ at age 16, and felt the call to be an evangelist. He carried a strong sense for sharing that the Good News means more than personal evangelism. From 1956 to 1966, he served as National Ministries’ director of Evangelism. Jitsuo defined the inclusive call of all Christian workers as ministry. He saw things whole and strongly led in the building of others for the work of justice in the building of the kingdom.
